How to Spot Fake Spotify Playlists: A 25-Point Check Before You Pitch

PlaylistGOATS teamUpdated October 12, 20264 min read

Short answer: A fake playlist has followers that don't match its curator, listening that doesn't match its followers and songs dumped in bulk. No single sign proves it. Several together mean keep your song away. The question isn't "fake or real?" It's "would I trust this with my song?"

This is the problem PlaylistGOATS exists to solve, so here's the manual check, then where tools come in.

Why it matters

Spotify says artificial streams don't earn royalties, don't count toward public stream numbers or charts and don't help recommendations. Your distributor can warn you, charge a penalty fee, suspend your account or remove your music. Getting added to a fake playlist isn't a win. It's a liability.

The 5 big signs

  1. The follower math is off. A playlist with 10,000 followers from a curator with 5 followers is suspicious. Real playlists are built through an audience, which usually shows in the curator's following. Even paid-ads curators usually pick up some followers on their own profile.
  2. It grew too fast. Zero to 1,000 saves overnight is a classic bot pattern. But modern bot farms drip-feed saves to look natural, so smooth growth doesn't prove it's real.
  3. Listening doesn't match following. Big follower count, full of unknown artists with tiny listener counts? Who's listening? One check: estimated monthly listeners should be well above daily follower growth. If a playlist gains dozens of followers a day with a few hundred estimated listeners, the math doesn't work.
  4. Songs dumped all at once. Real curators add songs gradually. Fifty tracks in 30 minutes looks like a selling operation.
  5. The text and branding. "Promo," "DM me," a payment handle in the description. Legit curators sometimes say this too, so treat it as a minor signal alone.

Spotify lists these in Spotify for Artists:

If you see these, tell your distributor and share any services you used. Spotify says that helps their review.

The 5-minute manual check

  1. Compare playlist followers to curator followers.
  2. Open five artists on the playlist. Do they have real monthly listeners?
  3. Scan when songs were added.
  4. Read the description and the curator's profile.
  5. Search the curator and playlist name with "scam" or "bot."

No-go if any two are true:

Where tools help (and where they don't)

Bot checkers score the same signals faster. They can't prove anything: bot farms adapt, and some legit playlists grown by ads look odd. Use a tool as one input, then do the manual check. PlaylistGOATS includes fake-playlist detection alongside curator matching and pitch tools.

What to do if you're already on one

  1. Check your Spotify for Artists data.
  2. Tell your distributor and share how you promoted.
  3. Report the playlist to Spotify. Spotify says it investigates reports.
  4. Stop working with whoever put you there.

FAQ

Can a real playlist look fake?

Yes. Paid ads can grow a legit playlist fast. That's why you look at several signals.

What if I'm already on a fake playlist?

Tell your distributor, report the playlist and keep records of how you promoted the song.

Do bot checker tools work?

They help, but none are perfect. Use them as one input.

Can I trust a playlist with 100K followers?

Not automatically. Size is the easiest thing to fake.

Does Spotify remove fake playlists?

Spotify says it investigates reported playlists and cleans artificial streams from public numbers daily.

How much does a fake playlist cost me?

Possibly your streams, royalties on those streams, a distributor penalty and, in extreme cases, the track.
